Why Not Winter Sports and Leisure in Mussoorie?

Winter has set in in many parts of the country. One would naturally think of going to a hill station and spend time playing with snowballs and and skiing down the mountains. One place to visit is the popular tourist hill-station spot Mussoorie situated close to Dehra Dun in Uttarkhand state in North India.

Winter is the best time to spend there as there are several resorts to stay in. One can spend reading a book or spend precious moments in front of fireplace braving the cold weather outside. This hill station is in the Gharwal hills in the Himalayan range of mountains.

The name Mussorie is linked up with a shrub called "mansoor" which is locally grown. Many Indians in fact call it " Mansoori".

One can walk down the popular promenade called the Mall. This was a popular walking stretch for the Britishers during British Raj and a board was kept saying" Indians and Dogs" are not allowed. In fact, this racist rule was applied in several hills stations during British rule and the former Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru often broke this rule and paid the fine. The Nehru family, which included former Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi often stayed at Mussorie. They also spent much time at Dehra Dun at Vijayalaksmi Pandit's residence, who is the sister of Nehru who resides there.

Now of course the charm of Mussoorie has got affected much on account of too many tourists pouring in causing much pollution and also too many hotels and lodges. There are problems of disposal of garbage. The reason for so many tourists visiting is on account of its proximity to Delhi, Ambala as well as Chandigarh.

Nevertheless, Mussoorie continues to remain an attractive tourist hill station.
