Jama Masjid - Ahmedabad
- By Divya Bolisetty - Published: 06/15/2010
The western chamber of Jama Masjid is a large, sprawling hall which stands on 260 pillars that have carvings and inscriptions belonging to Hindu and Jain culture. From the East, one can access the central courtyard and the eastern entrance gives way to an area which has the mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed Shah. The ''Roja'' or Tomb of Sultan Ahmed Shah was made by his son Mohammed Shah 2 for paying homage to his father. This tomb preserves the graves of three mighty rulers of Gujarat - Ahmed Shah, Mohammed Shah and Qutub-Ud-Din Ahmed Shah.
It took a whopping time span of 13 years to build Jama Masjid. This fine sample of Indo - Sarcenic Architecture, has a white marble courtyard with a pool in the centre. Situated close to the Masjid are the pols and the Teen Darwaza, which were built by Sultan Ahmed Shah. These gateways were emant to be the royal, grand entrance to the Maidan Shah. From these gateways, the Sultans would view the royal processions from the royal palace to Jama Masjid.
