Banganga Tank

Recently when I was in Mumbai I visited the sacred Banganga tank and I must say it was a soothing experience. Accordingly to mythology, around five thousand years back when Lord Rama was thirsty and wasn't able to find any water in the vicinity, he asked his brother Laxman to fetch him some water. Laxman with the help of his ban (arrow) shot an arrow to the grounds of this place and as a result holy Ganga's water sprouted out and hence Banganga tank came into existence.

This place in a way is a tribute to the pious river Ganga that flows thousands of miles away. This highly worshipped place is surrounded by 4 Temples which are all over 100 years old. It's situated in Walkeshwar Temple complex of Malabar hill area. Hordes of tourists and locals visit this structure especially during its 2 day festival in February when this place is full of glorious festivities. During this time artists and music enthusiasts from length and breadth of the country congregate and take part in various joyful concerts. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation organize this electrifying festival to promote this historic landmark site and to preserve its legendary fables. It's during this time when the tank is thoroughly cleansed and beautifully decorated. The rectangular pool within this structure is known for its mystical healing power. This ancient tank obtains its water from a fresh sweet spring and surrounded by steps on all 4 sides. Today, this holy site is an old surviving piece of history. It's a hugely respected place where people offer their prayers and seek blessings. So next time when you are in Mumbai, do visit this serene peaceful spot for a culturally reviving experience.
