Dhobhi Ghat - Washing That Makes Your Clothes Look Smashing

It might sound strange and bizarre but believe it or not Mumbai's famous Dhobi Ghat alias Washermen area is Asia's biggest open air laundry. Here men and women in large numbers collect clothes from all over the city and wash them in small cubicle like concrete spaces. They scrub, beat, toss and thrash dirty garments on flogging gravels. Soap bubbles flowing in air are a common sight here. After washing clothes the dhobis here dry garments on long extensive clotheslines and press them nicely with heavy coal irons. Finally when the whole process is done, they deliver them to their respective owners.

Dhobi ghat is a bustling place, full of activity which provides livelihood to around 200 people. It not only gives work to both men and women but it also known for housing innumerable labourers. It's this place's uniqueness which makes it attractive. This much sought after tourist spot is located near Mahalaxmi in Mumbai. Tourists from all over world visit this uncanny place to catch a glimpse of the largest human powered cleaning machine. This 100 year old place was built by the British and is still amongst the quirkiest places to see in Mumbai. Here, these dhobis charge a meagre sum of money for the valuable service they put in. However, I must say there are bunch of people who find this place filthy and messy due to its unappealing surroundings. With old buildings and overflowing drains adjoining this place, dhobi ghat may not seem touristy at all times. This place is not open for the general public so one has to view it from a decent distance. But the amount of thrill and fascination this place provides surely qualifies it as one of he city's top crowd pulling sites.
