Rajabai ClockTower

If London takes pride in its Big Ben then Mumbai too cherishes its own very special Rajabai Clock Tower. This majestic structure was constructed in 1879 and was funded by Premchand Roychand, a leading stock broker of that time. The entire expenditure in constructing this structure was single-handedly borne by him. The only condition he laid was that the structure should be named after his mother Rajabai. This tower is a well known landmark of the city. It's a widely admired tourist attraction which is known for its unique stained glass panels. This beautiful ornamented structure is located at the gardens of Mumbai University in south of Mumbai. It stands 280 feet high and consists of 5 extensively decorated floors. It took almost a frame of 9 years to get this historical piece constructed.

An English architect named Sir George Gilbert Scott designed this tower keeping his inspiration, the Big Ben in London in mind. Rajabai clock tower's architecture is a wonderful mixture of gothic and Venetian styles. Various ornamental figures adorn this tower's splendid beauty. It's made up of kurla stone and is buff in colour. Every 15 minutes this clock chimes. Earlier this tower used to play 16 different tunes including 'Rule Britannia', 'A Handel Symphony' and 'God Save the King' but with changing times it as got restricted to only the Big Ben chime. This tower used to give an amazing view of the entire metropolis but due to various unfortunate occurrences the spiral staircase leading to the top of the tower has been closed. The exquisitely appealing windows of this tower were recently given a makeover by the British conservationists as a result it now dazzles with grandeur. This octagonal structure has been a testament of transforming India and so it surely deserves a visit.
