India has got a lot of Dams but if you are talking about size, then the Nagarjuna Sagar dam is one such name that is said with pride. This huge dam is located in Andhra Pradesh and is just 150 kms away from Hyderabad in Guntur. It's touted as the 'World's largest masonry dam'. It's named after a Buddhist scholar and monk, Acharya Nagarjuna. The water from this dam is used for irrigating more than 10 lakhs acres of terrain. It provides water to districts like Khammam, Guntur, Prakasam and Nalgonda. The height of the dam is 124 meters and is as long as 1 km. It separates the two districts of Nalgonda and Guntur. This colossal piece of construction can store up to 11, 472 million cubic meters of water. Like a surreal dream this beautiful made-made construction looks immensely enticing during the evenings. Tourists love visiting this globally acknowledged place for its marvellous landscape.

This wonderful dam has even been a part of India's earliest Hydro-Electric endeavour and irrigation project. It's built athwart river Krishna and boasts of a canal system which is amongst the Largest in the World. Nagarjuna Sagar dam is known for embedding a special feature that attracts sightseers from all over the world. The artificial lake behind the premises of this dam has managed to gather a lot of hullabaloo. It's supposedly the Third Largest in the World and is known for its unique architectural design. Its covers a massive area of more than 60,000 sq km and is the only channel available through which one can afford to access the Nagarjunakonda Island. This island can be reached through a ferry and is a place where there's a museum full of ancient artefacts and relics including Buddhist vihara's, stupas and monasteries. So, next time you visit Andhra Pradesh, make sure that you catch at least a glimpse of this amazing place.
